What exactly is it in Vista Rainbar that requires it to be installed with Rainmeter included?

I just wrote a long post, but it got a little messy, so I'll try to be quick. There are many reasons why I prefer this method. The most important reason is that it's noob-friendly. Only one installer, and nothing else.

I tried to move to the method of having Rainmeter installed and then install Rainbar into it, but faced a lot of problems. I'll probably release a ZIP file containing the skins and configuration tools along with instructions on how to use it with Rainmeter installed.

How will you handle upgrading Rainmeter without having to upgrade your installer? Does upgrading Rainmeter break anything in Vista Rainbar? Just curious as people may want to use Vista Rainbar but keep their Rainmeter up to date.
If you can describe the issues we may be able to come up with a solution that doesn't require the install to include Rainmeter.

I could possibly make Vista Rainbar function with Rainmeter installed, BUT this would:
A) require a lot of changes into to the code, which I am not willing to do
B) create problems for noobs*

The best solution for me and for everyone else is a seperate .zip file that contains everything you need to use Vista Rainbar with Rainmeter. By doing so, you will NOT have the ability save skin settings (e.g. weather zip code, slideshow path, etc.) on update and also lose a couple of other things.

However, the Vista Rainbar 4.5.1 installer has an option to keep your current Rainmeter skins/themes even when uninstalling Rainmeter.

By the way, you won't need to worry about keeping Rainmeter up-to-date if you use Vista Rainbar. This is because 4.5.1 will have an offline and online installer. If you download the online installer, it will download the vr45xx.7z package from the net, which will have the latest Rainmeter included (with a slight delay, as I'd have to update it first, of course).

You should join in on the discussions in IRC sometime. We have discussed modifying the Configuration tool that jsmorley wrote for changing variables, so that it can save the values that a user fills in and reload them after an update to the skin files. I think that would solve your problem of skin updating.

I could make it so that Vista Rainbar installs to My Documents/Rainmeter and would require Rainmeter to be installed.

But, the problem is that if a user is not an adminstrator, and wants to install Vista Rainbar, there would have to be 2 installers. One for installing the skins (you can't run that as admin, because it'd not install the skins to the current user then), and one for installing the MailMeter.dll plugin and the fonts.

I have no idea how UAC works, so if I only had one installer, which would request "admin" rights, where would $DOCUMENTS point to (the current users Documents or admins Documents)? And then on XP?

Hello, I just recently tried out Vista rain bar, and I quite like it, but one bug I did notice is that the Recycle Bin does not function completely according to the description of its gadget.

When I first tried to use it, I BELIEVE it DID work, where a left click brings up the Recycle bin folder and a right click hold emptys the Recycle bin.

But what I did was....I wanted to remove the windows recycle bin on the desktop, so I went to GROUP POLICY, like this site shows....

http://www.tweakxp.com/article36805.aspx

and removed the Recycle Bin from desktop. The reason Why I did this is because I wanted to use the Vista Rainbar Recycle bin instead...but now, even when i left click on the Vista Rain bar Recycle bin gadget, nothing happens.

I don't know if this is because of the change I made in GROUP POLICY, but it is kind of frustrating.
Also, I notice that you cannot drag items into the Vista Rainbar Recycle bin to delete them...Might it be nice if you could do this?

Anyways...any help on fixing this would be greatly appreciated...perhaps there is a different way to get red of the "windows" recycle bin so this will not happen?

I'm not sure about hiding the windows recyclebin icon as I just don't show any icons on my desktop. As far as dropping files to send them to the bin, that ability does not exist yet for Rainmeter. It has been discussed and will likely be making it into a future version.

Until that happens there are other skinnable recyclebin replacements you could use. SkinTrash or Lompster come to mind.
