DayNightMap

Post by buckb »

DayNightMap.jpg
This skin shows the day and night areas of the world. Up to 50 user-configurable location pins can be placed on the map. Local time and rise/set info available for each location. Accurate (I hope!) Moon phase and orientation is displayed.

The skin is not yet optimized. Decrease the update frequency (default value is Update=1000) if processor usage is a problem.

Update 2024-01-02

DayNightMap has been updated with two new features:
  • An option has been added to show twilight contours.
  • Custom context menus have been added to the location pins. Right-clicking a location pin will open a menu with entries linking to websites of interest including Google Maps, Google Earth, Flightradar24, The Weather Channel, Wikipedia, and more.

Update 2024-01-24

DayNightMap has been updated with new features:
  • Miller and Web Mercator map projections have been added. Selection is made via context menu.
  • The skin can now be incrementally scaled by hovering over the map frame and scrolling the mouse wheel. Hover over the top-left corner of the frame for easiest scaling.
  • The Great Circle distance from the Observer Location to other location pins has been added to the location tooltips. The Great Circle route to any arbitrary location on the map can be displayed by middle-clicking anywhere on the map.
  • An option to select basic or detailed location tooltips has been added.

Nice work - again. I can foresee hours of fun tiddling around with this. Well actually, how it all works so well.

Nice!
Not sure why a lower update than 1000 would be used, unless you're doing a fast forward simulation for demonstration purposes. Otherwise, for real-time scenarios, a 1 second update should be more than enough considering that the Sun, for example, would take roughly 4 minutes to advance 1 degree from the 360 corresponding to a full rotation of the Earth (equation of time disregarded). Obviously, things would depend on the map size and the granularity you envisioned on it.
